October 2024 - President’s Message
Dear NOMA NM Family!
As mentioned in our previous newsletter, an important milestone we celebrated during the month of October was the NOMA NM chapter establishment. A big thank you to those who came out and celebrated this joyous occasion, including our NOMA Arizona friends and partners in this process. Now that the party is over and the music has quieted down, I want you all to know, we are just getting started!
The statistics in the design industry across the US are something to note. Of the more than 116,000 architects in the United States, 24% of those are women, 4% of those identify as Hispanic/Latino, and 2% identify as Black. Just 0.4% of licensed professionals – only about 500 – identify as Black women (Architect Magazine). Being in a diverse state where we celebrate the melding of cultures in New Mexico with a rich history of Indigenous and Spanish ancestral roots, it is important we lean into what makes our state unique – each other.
At our recent NOMA NM planning session, we dug into our mission statement to identify what our key goals and committee planning would consist of for the following year. Along with the theme of diversity, equity, inclusion – we leaned into our small remote communities and examined the opportunities for NOMA NM’s reach across those in rural and urban areas. We also discussed how we can lift our youth in the state for opportunities in design. The recent data from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards indicates candidates of color make up 44% of ARE test takers with only 29% completing the exam process. It will be our goal to increase this number in our state for representation of our community within the field of architecture!
Our NOMA board plans to meet during the month of December for our Annual retreat session where we will establish committees for the upcoming year. I encourage you to get involved and make your voice heard!
Regarding membership for NOMA NM, now is the time to join or renew your membership. Annual membership runs from January 2025 – December 2025, signing up now will get you 3 months included for 2024 at no additional cost. I hope you join us to continue growing the chapter and making all voices heard!
